Waterproof performance (water pressure resistant, water resistant)

Waterproof performance refers to the ability of a fabric to prevent water from wetting or penetrating.

There are two main ways for water to wet and penetrate fabrics: one is to penetrate water from one side of the fabric to the other through capillary action; the other is to force water to penetrate the pores of the fabric by applying a certain amount of pressure. , penetrating from one side to the other. Pay attention to the following terms:

Waterproofness: A fabric’s ability to prevent moisture from wetting and penetrating.

Water repellency: The fabric has the ability to resist water wetting (similar to the lotus leaf effect, also known as surface moisture resistance, which refers to the water test).

Water resistance: The ability of a fabric to resist penetration by water (referred to as hydrostatic pressure).

1) Test method

GB/T 4744-2013 “Testing and Evaluation of Waterproof Properties of Textiles by Hydrostatic Pressure Method”

Method overview: Under the specified test conditions, one side of the sample is subjected to a water pressure that continues to rise at a certain rate until three water seepage points appear on the other side. Record the pressure value when the third water seepage point appears, that is, use the fabric The hydrostatic pressure endured represents the resistance encountered by water penetrating the fabric.

FZ/T 01004-2008 “Determination of Water Permeability Resistance of Coated Fabrics”

This method is to test the water outflow of the sample under a certain hydrostatic pressure. If there is no water penetration or wetting, the test passes, otherwise it fails.

GB/T 4745-2012 “Method for Determination of Surface Moisture Resistance of Textile Fabrics – Water Test”

Method overview: Install the sample on the ring holder, keep the holder at 45° to the horizontal, and the center of the sample is a certain distance from the bottom of the nozzle. Spray the sample with a certain amount of distilled or deionized water. After spraying, by comparing the appearance of the sample with the description and pictures of the water staining phenomenon, the water staining level of the fabric is determined, and the waterproof performance of the fabric is evaluated.

2) How to evaluate?

3) How to identify it?

If the waterproof performance of the product meets the requirements of relevant standards, the name of the product can be clearly stated as “Waterproof + Product Category”, such as: waterproof windbreaker, rainstorm-proof top.
