Clothes contaminated with bacteria can be found everywhere, but clothes made of bacteria are unique: The BioLogic team at MIT has created a smart piece of clothing. 这件神奇衣服的发明者是一个跨界整合、学科交叉的7人团队,其中有5位华人。记者采访了团队成员、浙江大学计算机学院博士研究生王冠云。

  王冠云说,团队成员使用“纳豆枯草芽孢杆菌”来制作这件神奇的衣服。在日本,这种细菌被大量用于发酵黄豆制成食品。“也就是说,这种细菌对人体是安全的。”

  纳豆菌有着奇妙的特性,随着外部环境湿度的变化,它会吸水或者放水,由此还会造成自身体积的膨胀或收缩。王冠云说,团队中来自生物工程专业的成员发现,即使纳豆菌死去,其细胞内所含的一些生物质使这一特性仍可运作。
  由此,团队得以将纳豆菌制成一种生物膜,并尝试与其他材料结合成全新的复合材料,以利用这种膨胀-收缩的性质� “The research and development process was not smooth sailing.   团队制作的视频显示,当身体发热、出汗,这种生物合成材料就能作出响应,一片片像鳞片一样的皮瓣开始卷曲。当湿度继续上升,皮瓣会完全打开,达到佳的透气性。王冠云表示,成功研发这件智能衣服使人们意识到,我们能够精确地校准生物材料的行为,它成为某种机器,而不是不可预知的生物体。

  研究如何快速、批量化地制作纳豆菌生物膜并将其印刷在氨纶上,是王冠云承担的主要任务。“我主要负责开发了一套3D打印细胞平台,不仅提升了这种生物材料的制作精度,也大大提升了制作速度。”王冠云说。

  王冠云还承担了一部分设计工作。人们在视频中不仅看到会呼吸的衣服,还看到了吸水发生形变来提示茶叶状态的茶叶包、会张合的灯罩等,这些都来自王冠云这样的工业设计师的奇思妙想。

  这件由细菌制成的衣服向人们展示了一个全新的智能化前景:我们终将告别电机或马达,而改用活生生的生命体。它们能够对水分、温度等自然环境作出反应,潜藏着丰富的可能性,将带来目前许多产品无法实现的功能。
