Huntsman Textile Chemicals and DuPont subsidiary Chemours launch Zelan R3 fluorine-free waterproof
Huntsman Fabric Dyeing and DuPont have collaborated to launch a new, fluorine-free, durable water-blocking fabric product and workwear, which is said to be the industry’s first and only renewable water-blocking treatment technology. This is 63% derived from plant-based non-GMO raw materials.
In an ongoing effort to promote a more sustainable development in the fabric industry, Huntsman Fabric Dyeing and Chemours, a subsidiary of DuPont, launched Zelan R3, which is a renewable resource, fluorine-free, long-lasting water-blocking finishing technology. It claims to be a breakthrough product and is believed to be: the first and only regenerable water-repellent treatment technology in the industry today.
Huntsman stated that the new DWR finishing technology contains 63% renewable resource content, derived from a variety of plant-based sources, which are non-genetically modified and non-food raw materials. It is also fully compliant with the specifications of the Oeko-Tex 100 eco-fabric product standard and is compliant with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Joint Roadmap Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL).
Huntsman stated that the new DWR post-treatment technology effectively repels water and general water-based liquids, such as juice, hot coffee and red wine, and is designed to be used on cotton, synthetic fibers and blended chemical fiber fabrics. It claims that it is three times more durable than existing non-fluorinated agents and provides high-performance water-blocking effects that can withstand at least 30 washes. This is a considerable water-blocking product.
This treatment is used to apply chemicals at or below the load level of other typical water-repellent finishes, and can be combined with Phobol Xan Extender to further improve cleaning durability.
Huntsman Marketing Manager Lee Howarth said that brands are increasingly demanding products with non-destructive, high-lasting performance, sustainable development and renewable resources. Zelan R3 finishing technology was developed to meet this need, providing superior water barrier protection while also reducing the environmental impact of finished fabrics.
It was also revealed that Chemours is now applying to become a bluesign partner, which allows the company and Zelan R3 finished products to be evaluated, meet bluesign approval, and be listed on the bluesign bluefinder list.
