The chemical fiber industry is expected to bottom out and stabilize – Interview with Chen Xinwei, President of China Chemical Fiber Industry Association
In the past year, how was the overall performance of my country’s chemical fiber industry? What characteristics does the industry development show? In the first year of fully implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, how should my country’s chemical fiber industry seize the opportunity, go all out for development, and inject new momentum into highquality development?
A reporter from “China Textile News” recently conducted an exclusive interview with Chen Xinwei, President of the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association. He analyzed and reviewed the development of my country’s chemical fiber industry in 2022, and looked forward to the trends and opportunities for industry development in 2023.
ExportGrowth demonstrates resilience
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, from January to November 2022, my country’s chemical fiber output was 61.77 million tons, a slight decrease of 0.1% year-on-year; the operating income of the chemical fiber industry increased by 6.4% year-on-year, but the total profit decreased by 65.05% year-on-year; revenue profit The rate was 2.13%, a decrease of 4 percentage points from 2021. The profit contribution of chemical fiber accounts for 12.5% of the total profit of the textile industry.
“2022 will be a difficult year for chemical fiber companies. Facing the complex and severe domestic and international situations and the impact of multiple factors, the chemical fiber industry is operating under pressure. Affected by the repeated epidemic, the operation of domestic and foreign supply chains and the resumption of work of enterprises Increased production uncertainty has brought great resistance to the normal production and operation of chemical fiber companies, especially small businesses. High and sharp fluctuations in crude oil prices have also seriously dragged down the chemical fiber market. At the same time, downstream demand continues to be sluggish.” Chen Xinwei said, “In general, Look, the production and operation situation of the chemical fiber industry in 2022 will be severe, and the industry will ‘increase revenue but not profit’.”
Chen Xinwei emphasized that the textile industry’s economic operation will generally show a slowdown in 2022. The core factor affecting the operation of the chemical fiber industry is still insufficient demand. Judging from the start-up rate of major chemical fiber downstream industries, it has generally declined compared with the same period last year. Taking the operating rate of the weaving industry in Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions as an example, the average operating rate in March was 70%, down 16 percentage points from the same period last year; the monthly average operating rate from April to August was below 60%, and the monthly average operating rate in September and October The average operating rate has rebounded to around 70%; however, it has shown a downward trend since late October, and the operating rate before the end of the year was around 40%.
However, Chen Xinwei pointed out that my country’s chemical fiber industry still shows strong development resilience in 2022, especially in the operation of the carbon fiber industry, the development of green fiber varieties, and industry exports There are highlights in several aspects.
“The domestic carbon fiber industry still maintains high prosperity, market demand continues to increase, production capacity scale grows rapidly, production lines are basically operating at full capacity, and multiple new projects are racing against time to meet the construction deadline.” Chen Xinwei said that based on feedback from key enterprises, throughout the year, The company’s main operating income and net profit both increased significantly compared with the same period last year. In 2022, it is expected that the entire domestic carbon fiber industry will still achieve overall profitability.
At the same time, under the guidance of new development concepts and the “double carbon” goal, the scale of the bio-based fiber industry has maintained rapid growth. For example, the key technologies of polylactic acid fiber have continued to make breakthroughs and attracted more attention; the lyocell fiber industry The development trend has obviously improved. Chen Xinwei said that the pace of research and development of differentiated and functional fibers is also accelerating. Large companies with good product development, good brands, and high degree of internationalization have relatively better profits and are less affected by market fluctuations.
It is worth noting that in 2022, my country’s chemical fiber product exports will still maintain a good growth trend.
According to China Customs data, from January to November 2022, the total export volume of major chemical fiber products increased by 9.44% year-on-year, which was higher than that of the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” (2015) Since then, the average annual growth rate has increased by 2.11 percentage points from 7.33%. Among them, the export volume of acrylic fiber grew strongly, with a year-on-year increase of 203.75% from January to November; the export volume of polyester bottle flakes also performed well. After the export volume increased by 36% year-on-year in 2021, the export volume from January to November 2022 continued to grow significantly. 42.99%, with Russia, Philippines, Turkey, Algeria and Peru being the top five export markets.
“In 2022, my country’s chemical fiber product exports will grow, reflecting the increase in international market demand and the improvement in the competitiveness of my country’s chemical fiber products.” Chen Xinwei emphasized.
Innovation capabilities continue to increase
In April 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission jointly issued the “Guiding Opinions on the High-Quality Development of the Chemical Fiber Industry” (hereinafter referred to as the “Guiding Opinions”).
The “Guiding Opinions” require that the chemical fiber industry should build a high-end, intelligent and green modern industrial system during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, and comprehensively build a strong chemical fiber country. In terms of high-end dough requirements, innovation capabilities have been continuously enhanced, industry R&D investment intensity has reached 2%, and high-performance fiber R&D and manufacturing capabilities meet national strategic needs. In terms of intelligence, digital transformation has achieved remarkable results, with the digital penetration rate of enterprise operation and management reaching 80%, and the digital control rate of key processes reaching 80%. In terms of greening, the green manufacturing system continues to improve, the proportion of green fiber has increased to more than 25%, and the output of bio-based chemical fibers and degradable fiber materials has increased by more than 20% annually. To enable low-carbon development, improve the level of recycling, expand green fiber production, and build a clean, low-carbon, and circular green manufacturing system; fifth, we must implement the “three-product” strategy of increasing variety, improving quality, and creating brands, such as optimizing the supply structure, strengthening Standard support, promotion of brand building, etc. Increase the supply of high-quality products, optimize the high-performance fiber production and application system, cultivate well-known fiber brands, expand fiber application fields, lead the improvement of textile value from the raw material side, and serve the development of strategic emerging industries.
Chen Xinwei emphasized that at the corporate level, first, we must pay attention to environmental changes and policy trends, and formulate response strategies and effective competitive strategies; second, we must develop internal strength and enhance our own development resilience; third, we must do a good job in green and low-carbon transformation, such as focusing on Save energy and reduce consumption, and make a fuss about the national “double carbon” strategy to reduce costs and increase efficiency; fourth, we must accelerate the advancement of informatization and intelligent construction; fifth, we must actively seek breakthroughs and adjustments in product innovation to increase the added value of products; sixth, we must comprehensively improve production Management level, create efficient and agile operation capabilities, and help reduce costs and increase efficiency; seventh, we must focus on the long term and formulate medium- and long-term development strategies for the enterprise.
The convening of the Central Economic Work Conference also injected confidence into the development of chemical fiber enterprises.
“The Central Economic Work Conference clearly pointed out that in 2023, we must adhere to the priority of stability and seek progress while maintaining stability, continue to implement proactive fiscal policies and prudent monetary policies, increase macro-policy control efforts, and strengthen coordination and cooperation of various policies, Form a joint force to jointly promote high-quality development. The meeting clearly prioritized the expansion of domestic demand and emphasized the need to support the development of the private economy and private enterprises, which has injected strong development confidence into private entrepreneurs.” Chen Xinwei said, In the chemical fiber industry, the production capacity of private enterprises accounts for more than 80% of the entire industry. These policies will be conducive to the stable development of the chemical fiber industry.
Talking about the operation of the industry in 2023, Chen Xinwei believes: “In the short term, the chemical fiber industry and enterprises may face greater challenges, but the development of the industry is resilient, and it is expected that the industry will bottom out and stabilize in 2023.”
“2023 is the first year to fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and is also a critical year for the 14th Five-Year Plan to connect the past and the next. The chemical fiber industry must continue to implement the “Guiding Opinions on the High-Quality Development of the Chemical Fiber Industry” “The overall requirements and key tasks of “China’s chemical fiber industry” are to move towards high-end, intelligent and green high-quality development. my country’s chemical fiber industry must strengthen its confidence, consolidate its advantages, be brave enough to take on responsibilities, enhance development resilience, and further promote the high-quality development of the industry.” Chen Xinwei said .
